PHENOMENON

Phenomenon (1979) consisted of an 8’ x 8’ x 8’ double-wall room painted with a black interior and installed with no source of light or sound. Upon entering, the viewer was confronted with a disorienting space void of any reference to time and with sensory depravation of sight, sound and proprioception. The viewer was challenged by an acute awareness of the sensory reactions of their body in this vacuous space. One’s breathing and arterial flows as well as the phantasms or sights brought on by the blackness were amplified by the experience.
